Empowering Nurses to Enhance Care for Pediatric Neuroblastoma Patients: A Comprehensive Training Program
Abstracts

Abstract

Introduction: Neuroblastoma is a complex and aggressive pediatric cancer requiring specialized nursing care. Nurses play a crucial role in managing symptoms, administering chemotherapy, and providing emotional support.

Objective was to design and implement a comprehensive training program that empowers nurses to enhance care for pediatric neuroblastoma patients in their own institutions.

Methodology: A two-day training program was conducted, comprising lectures, case studies, and hands-on training through workstations. The workstations included practical training on CVAD care and maintenance, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and chemotherapy preparation and administration. A total of 133 nurses participated.

Results: The overall satisfaction was high, with 119 participants rating their experience as “Excellent” and 13 as “Very Good”. Participants reported gaining improved knowledge, enhanced skills, and a better understanding of neuroblastoma. The conference received positive feedback, with participants praising the comprehensive coverage of neuroblastoma, practical skills development, and multidisciplinary approach. Suggestions for improvement included more interactive sessions and a focus on clinical application. The conference had a significant impact on nursing practice, with participants reporting improved knowledge, enhanced skills, and intended changes in practice to improve patient care.

Conclusion: This comprehensive training program had a profound impact on empowering nurses to enhance care for pediatric neuroblastoma patients. The key takeaway message is that nurses can make a significant difference in the lives of their patients by acquiring the necessary knowledge, skills, and confidence to provide specialized care. An area of improvement identified by participants was the need for similar training programs for other disease conditions, highlighting the potential for this program to serve as a model for future initiatives.
